When waterproofing design is done correctly, unfortunately there is no such thing as a ‘one solution fits all’ approach. The best solution is simply dependent on too many variables, including the method of construction and the desired end use of the basement, to name just two.
In order to achieve the desired result there are three ‘Types’ of waterproofing, called A, B and C, which can be used either on their own or in combination – generally speaking, the most comprehensive waterproofing designs use all three types in order to provide multiple layers of protection.
However, it is also widely known within the UK waterproofing industry that the most effective type of waterproofing, and the one that is least likely to suffer from failures is Type C, otherwise known as cavity drain membrane waterproofing. The Newton CDM System is a perfect example of a comprehensive Type C solution.
Not only is Type C waterproofing a comprehensive and maintainable system, it is also the system that is most likely to achieve a completely dry internal environment. Furthermore, the system can be installed to any type of project, from new-build basements, to basement extensions, existing basement conversions, and even listed and historic properties.
Components of the Newton CDM System
At Newton Waterproofing Systems, we would usually recommend that a ‘Type C’ Cavity Drain system (CDM) be installed. A well-designed cavity drain waterproofing system places voids, created by the cuspated (studded) membrane, between the internal finish and the wall, capturing water and directing it to the drainage channels for removal from the building.
Recommendations of the British Standard 8102:2022
The Newton CDM System complies with the recommendations within British Standard 8102:2022 – Code of Practice for Protection of Below Ground Structures Against Water Ingress for a “maintainable Type C waterproofing system”, and includes Inspection Ports to ensure maintainability and correct servicing of the system.
This system utilises the wall and floor membranes, together with strategically placed drainage channels, to depressurise and manage the incoming water. This is why they are sometimes referred to as ‘water management systems’ Once captured, water is discharged from the property either via gravity to open elevations or removed by mechanical means e.g. pumping systems.

Input From a Waterproofing Specialist
BS 8102:2022 recognises that, for a below ground waterproofing project to be successful, strategies for dealing with groundwater, soil gases and contaminants need to be considered from the very earliest stages of the design process.
The British Standard also recommends that a “Waterproofing Specialist” should be included as a part of the design team so that an integrated waterproofing solution is created. Both Newton and our network of Newton Specialist Basement Contractors meet this requirement.
