The Newton Waterproofing Index is a unique specification tool in the construction industry, providing specifiers and designers with a scoring system through which it is possible to accurately assess the level of risk and potential success involved in a waterproofing design. The Newton Waterproofing Index (NWI) is the UK’s first and only waterproofing specification tool that enables specifiers and designers to assess the risk and success potential of waterproofing strategies for earth-retaining or below-ground structures. The NWI delivers a quantifiable score that aligns with the British Standard 8102:2022 internal environment grades—Grades 1a, 1b, 2, and 3—making specification assessments clearer and more objective.
NWI scores are awarded by Newton’s experienced waterproofing specialists and independently audited by Newton’s insurer, yielding a trusted evaluation of specification performance. Rather than a single score, each design receives a scoring range:
This dual-range format reflects real-world installation variability and encourages safer design choices.
Newton’s Solution Sheets work hand-in-hand with the NWI, offering specifiers downloadable, ready‑made design packages. Each includes:
Designs achieving the highest possible NWI score (4.0) become eligible for the Newton Protected Basement specification. This premium package includes Type A, B, and C waterproofing, installation by a Newton Specialist Basement Contractor (NSBC), covering product, design, and installation.
Our staff are able to provide guidance for projects of all sizes, whether you require some general advice about damp or waterproofing, or support with technical drawings and specifications.
