Rib Deck Waterproofing – PolyMaxx HA

Concrete rib decks, sometimes referred to as ribbed slabs, are a common form of in-situ concrete construction used in floors, balconies, podium decks, roof slabs, and car parks. The concrete is typically cast over profiled steel decking that acts as permanent formwork and tensile reinforcement, after which the finished surface behaves as a conventional reinforced concrete deck.

From a waterproofing perspective, it is the concrete surface that matters. Once the slab has cured, a rib deck is waterproofed in exactly the same way as any other concrete deck.

PolyMaxx HA is purpose designed to waterproof exposed concrete structures and is well suited to rib deck applications where long-term durability, full adhesion, and seamless detailing are required.

Understanding Rib Deck Construction

Rib deck systems are widely used across the UK due to their speed of construction and structural efficiency. The profiled steel deck remains permanently embedded beneath the concrete slab and is not part of the waterproofing interface.

For the waterproofing contractor, the relevant substrate is:

  • A cured concrete slab
  • Constructed to ensure that water is drained via outlets
  • With typical deck features such as upstands, penetrations, abutments, and movement joints

In practical terms, a concrete rib deck presents no unusual waterproofing challenges compared with other reinforced concrete decks.

Waterproofing Concrete Rib Decks

When waterproofing a concrete rib deck with PolyMaxx HA, the system build-up and application methodology are the same as for any structural concrete deck.

There is no requirement for special detailing because the deck was formed on profiled steel. The waterproofing membrane is applied to the concrete surface and functions independently of the formwork below.

Liquid-applied waterproofing systems are particularly effective on rib decks because they:

  • Form a seamless, fully bonded membrane
  • Follow the concrete profile without laps or joints
  • Allow straightforward detailing at penetrations and interfaces
  • Reduce the risk of lateral water tracking

PolyMaxx HA provides a continuous waterproofing layer that becomes an integral part of the deck surface.

Preparation of Concrete Rib Decks

As with all concrete waterproofing, performance depends on correct preparation.

Preparation of rib decks typically includes:

  • Removal of surface laitance by mechanical abrasion or controlled jet washing
  • Cleaning to remove dust, release agents, and construction residues
  • Verification that the concrete is sufficiently dry for priming
  • Application of PolyMaxx HA Primer to the concrete surface

Where exposed steel elements exist above the slab, such as balustrade bases or edge restraints, these are prepared separately and primed using PolyMaxx Detailing Primer prior to waterproofing.

This approach ensures consistent adhesion and long-term membrane performance.

PolyMaxx HA Benefits for Rib Deck Waterproofing

PolyMaxx HA performs exceptionally well on concrete rib decks due to the inherent characteristics of the system.

Key benefits include:

  • A fully bonded membrane that prevents water migration beneath the waterproofing
  • Reinforced resin technology that accommodates normal structural movement
  • Seamless application with no sheet joints or overlaps
  • High adhesion to prepared concrete using PolyMaxx HA Primer
  • Rapid curing, allowing efficient construction sequencing
  • Compatibility with anti-slip and decorative finishes for exposed decks

This makes PolyMaxx HA suitable for balconies, walkways, roof decks, podium slabs formed using ribbed construction.

Installation and Warranty Requirements

To qualify for the 20-year PolyMaxx warranty, rib deck waterproofing installations must be completed by one of our PolyMaxx certified contractors and accompanied by full photographic and environmental documentation. This ensures quality control and long-term performance in service.
