Newton’s specialist damp proofing products were used to damp proof a school in Brighton which required multiple treatments as part of its refurbishment. Installed by Newton Specialist Basement Contractor CavityTech.

The Project

St Mary’s Hall in Brighton is a prestigious private school which required multiple damp proofing treatments as part of its refurbishment. Miller Bourne Architects, in conjunction with Newton’s technical department, put together a scheme to successfully damp proof the building using a portfolio of Newton materials.

The client commissioned Newton Specialist Basement Contractor Cavity Tech Systems Ltd to carry out the works. Their extensive experience in damp proofing Brighton properties made them a perfect fit for the project.

The Solution

The building required treatment for driving and penetrating moisture as well as rising damp. Cavity Tech Systems considered the different construction elements within the structure and the space constraints when designing the damp proofing solution. They mechanically fixed BBA-certified Newton 803 Mesh (dimpled meshed membrane) to the substrate using Newton Mesh plugs.

In addition, the membrane provides a physical barrier to prevent staining to new surfaces which is often the case when heating up structures after the refurbishment process. The system prevents nitrates and sulfates from passing through to the new finishes without injecting a chemical damp proof course. Cavity Tech Systems Ltd were able to liaise with the main contractor, architects and Newton Technical on a daily basis. This allowed them to overcome any issues when dealing with historic building restoration guidelines.

The Result

Using Newton Membranes provided a sympathetic approach to the listed building. It also complies with listed building guidelines as a reversible solution.

The Newton System 800 was easily installed in a timely manner enabling the project to move forward at a pace without the need for drying out time. We were able to provide the client with an insured backed guarantee for damproofing this historic school.
