Summary

This multi-million pound Listed property was refurbished, extended and waterproofed by Wing Waterproofing with Newton System 500.

The Project

Newton Waterproofing Systems offer extensive solutions when waterproofing riverside properties. The owners completely refurbished and extended this spectacular multi-million-pound listed property on the Thames to create a large modern home. They also retained the features of the original design.

As a large section of the project was below ground level and metres from the River Thames, a robust and reliable waterproofing approach was essential. The client commissioned Newton Specialist Basement Contractor Wing Waterproofing to undertake the project. The contractor underpinned the existing vaulted arches and front brick walls to create the additional living space required.

The Solution

To the rear of the property, a very large RC concrete box was cast to provide a new subterranean living space, coupled with a large swimming pool. Wing Waterproofing used Newton 101F as a cementitious Type A barrier system across all underpinned sections to provide a resistance to water coming through the dry pack elements. The contractor protected new-build joints in the RC box by encasing Newton 303 PolyProof water bars in the newly shuttered box throughout all the vaulted areas.

The contractor installed the Newton 508 membrane and batten-hung it off the plugs. The system diverted any water to the Newton Basedrain, which the team fitted around the full perimeter of the structure. Before installing the membrane system, the contractor installed a new reinforced-concrete slab throughout both elements of construction. The engineered slab incorporated concrete sumps within the structure to capture incoming water for mechanical removal.

The team applied Newton 906 Lime Inhibitor to the slab and installed 50 mm of closed-cell insulation as a spacer. Next, they then installed the Newton 508 membrane with a 65 mm screed and underfloor heating to complete the finish.

The Result

Both new-build and existing building elements were waterproofed to a Grade 3 habitable environment in accordance with BS 8102:2009. This project was in an extremely high-risk area being metres fror the Thames. The skill of the main contractor interfacing with NSBC Wing Waterproofing ensured the client had a watertight structure.

The projection of the joints with the contingency of the Cavity Drain means the system is “maintainable” a prerequisite when designing waterproofing systems to BS8102:2009. Wing Waterproofing took PI on the design and installation so the client has an insured-backed guarantee for all works.
