The British Standard 8102:2022 is the ‘Code of Practice for Protection of Below Ground Structures Against Water Ingress’.
The Standard takes the form of recommendations and guidance, and the execution of its recommendations should be entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced people.
The aim of this paper is to provide a section-by-section overview of the most important updates in the new 2022 version of the Standard, which replaces the previous 2009 version. Where possible, we will also summarise how this affects the waterproofing design philosophy and strategies that we recommend.
Newton Technical Director Richard Crossley (CSSW, WDS) was one of the specialist waterproofing experts on the rewrite committee for the new Standard. The committee consisted of representatives from numerous waterproofing industry manufacturers, installers, designers, insurers, engineers, gas specialists and trade associations.
Every statement and recommendation within the Standard was considered and debated. It is also important that any such statement is not considered in isolation, but as one element of the many interlinked sections that make up the Standard.
Please note: This is not a comprehensive list of every single change made within the 2022 version of BS 8102. Rather, this is our overview of what we consider to be the most significant and noteworthy updates.
