This substantial detached period house in Exeter was undergoing major renovations to improve the property when the clients called in Newton Specialist Basement Contractor Timberwise to provide a waterproofing solution for the extensive basement, which was to be converted into a home cinema and living area. Utilising the Newton CDM System, the installation is fully compliant with British Standard 8102:2009.

The Project

The clients called in Newton Specialist Basement Contractor Timberwise to provide a waterproofing solution for the extensive basement of their substantial detached period house in Exeter. The finished result will contain a home cinema and living area.

The Solution

With a remit to waterproof the existing basement area and stairway void in order to protect the timber staircase from water and damp, Timberwise deemed that the most appropriate and effective form of waterproofing would be Newton’s CDM System. BS 8102:2009 defines the maintainable cavity drain waterproofing system as ‘Type C’, it provides the most failsafe form of waterproofing. It is ideal for creating dry, habitable spaces when refurbishing existing properties.

After installing an internal brick partition wall to ensure continuity of the waterproofing, Timberwise installed Newton 508 cavity drainage membrane throughout the internal space. The contractor placed Newton Fibran XPS 500-C insulation beneath the floor membrane. This creates a drained space for the Newton Basedrain drainage system. This then directs captured water to the Newton Titan-2 chamber and CP250 pumps.

Unlike the process of cutting recesses into the floor slab for the drainage channels, using Fibran XPS 500-C saves both time and money on site with the easy-to-install insulation boards. This creates a drainage void without compromising on effectiveness or compressive strength.

The Result

Timberwise provided the client with a completely dry, habitable space, perfect for conversion into the home cinema of their dreams.

As well as being compliant with BS 8102:2009, the client has further peace of mind thanks to Timberwise’s 10-year guarantee. Furthermore, Newton’s 30-year product warranty supported the installation.
