Cementitious tanking slurries and renders form a bonded waterproof barrier to concrete, masonry, and blockwork substrates. When correctly specified, they resist hydrostatic pressure by relying on substrate integrity and detailing quality at joints, penetrations, and interfaces.
Within BS 8102:2022, Type A waterproofing refers to a barrier system applied either to the internal or external face of a structure to resist water ingress. The cement-based products in the HydroCoat System range bond strongly to the internal side of the structure, resisting groundwater pressure attempting to force its way inward and feature rigid, polymer-modified, and crystalline cementitious systems, allowing selection to be aligned with substrate condition, exposure level, construction sequencing, and waterproofing risk.
For externally applied Type A sheet membranes, please visit the HydroBond System page.
Cementitious tanking systems are applied directly to properly prepared structural substrates. Performance depends on:
• Substrate quality and continuity
• Detailing at construction joints and service penetrations
• Compatibility with applied finishes and protection layers
Cementitious tanking systems are inherently suitable for internal (negative-side) waterproofing. However, performance remains dependent on product selection, groundwater pressure, substrate condition, and detailing quality.
Newton formulates its cementitious tanking slurries and renders to deliver specific performance characteristics, depending on application requirements, substrate condition, and exposure conditions.
Depending on the system selected, key characteristics may include:
• Flexibility and crack accommodation to tolerate minor substrate movement
• High compressive strength suitable for structurally demanding environments
• Chemical and abrasion resistance for aggressive or high-wear conditions
• Crystalline waterproofing action that penetrates the concrete matrix, blocking capillaries, micro-cracks & pore networks
• Installers apply renders and screeds as a single, thicker coat. Ideal for substrates too uneven for thin slurry applications.
These characteristics allow designers to align system selection with structural conditions, detailing complexity, and long-term performance requirements.
Depending on product formulation and site conditions, cementitious tanking systems can be applied by:
• Brush
• Roller
• Specialist spray equipment
When correctly specified, installed, and protected, cementitious tanking systems deliver durable, long-term performance consistent with design life expectations.
